N.Y. Met Opera threatens to lock out musicians in labor dispute

Thursday, July 24, 2014 4:28pm

By Jonathan Allen NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York's Metropolitan Opera said it will lock out its musicians and other unionized employees next week if a new contract agreement is not reached, in an escalation of a labor dispute that threatens to derail an entire opera season. Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager, wrote a letter to chorus members, orchestra players, stagehands and other employees on Wednesday saying they should prepare for a work stoppage if a new agreement is not reached when current contracts expire on July 31. The Met, which says it has an annual operating budget of over $300 million, has blamed a drop in its revenues since 2011 on dwindling audiences for opera worldwide.

Justin Bieber teases new music on Instagram

Thursday, July 24, 2014 3:52am

Canadian singer Justin BieberJustin Bieber enticed fans on Wednesday by sharing several short clips from his recent time in the studio. The Canadian pop star posted a total of 11 clips, seemingly from as many new songs, and captioned the first "Cold waters," presumably a track name. In each of the seconds-long videos, Bieber simply focuses the camera on a studio soundboard and moves it to the beat of the music. The only other clue is a tweet from Bieber on the same day that read, "Great night in the studio."
